Winds of up to 80mph have hit parts of the UK as Storm Pia sweeps in, with a yellow severe weather warning in place across much of the country until 3pm on Thursday.
The warning covers Scotland, Northern England and the Midlands, North Wales, Northern Ireland and parts of East Anglia, and is bringing travel chaos in the run-up to Christmas.
Among the disruption taking place, train company TransPennine Express has issued “do not travel” advice asking customers to delay journeys in and out of Edinburgh until after 3pm due to the strong winds, with other problems being caused by trees falling across tracks.
British Airways has adjusted today’s flight schedule as a result of air traffic control restrictions.
Euston staion in London has closed to passengers. And drivers have been told the weekend will be the busiest time of the festive period – with 21 million trips expected before Christmas.
